Basica, Blalock Win Avila Bay Vince Dente Memorial

Former UC-Santa Barbara standout Leo Basica beat current Cal Poly player Brian McPhee for the men’s Open title at the 19th annual Vince Dente Memorial Day Tourna

ment played at the Avila Bay Club in Avila Beach. Basica needed three sets to notch the victory, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. In the women’s Open, a pair of Cal Poly teammates squared off as Brittany Blalock beat Diane Filip, 6-3, 6-2.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Vince Dente Junior Foundation, which helps local youth and groups with tennis expenses.

In the men’s Open doubles final, Dusty Kemick and Willie Quest beat Andrew Gerst and Alex Sonesson, 6-4, 6-3 while Cal Poly’s formidable pair of Blalock and Andre Dome downed Ventura County’s Tracie Currie and Matt Simpson 6-0, 6-4 for the mixed doubles title. In the 50s, Nick Schleif got past Rudy Garcia 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1 and in the 60s Howard Nicholson beat Larry Lidia 6-1, 6-2.

SoCal Seniors Shine Overseas

A trio of Southern Californians led their respective U.S. teams to ITF World Team Championships recently in Mallorca, Spain.

Tina Karwasky of Glendale was the No. 1 player on the Maureen Connolly Cup team for the third straight year and for the third straight year she led the U.S. to the Connolly Cup. She won four of her five singles matches, dropping only a match to Great Britain in the semis, but teamed with Joanne Russell of Florida to win the deciding doubles match. The U.S. dominated Spain in the final. Tina’s teammates were Russell, Mary Ginnard of Florida and Martha Downing of Northern California.

Mike Fedderly of Palm Desert recently moved into the 50s. He was part of the winning Fred Perry Cup team along casino online with Texas captain Val Wilder and two others from the Lone Star state, Ross Persons and Peter Markes. Marianne Robertson of Malibu was a member of the Maria Esther Bueno Cup which finished second to Great Britain. She went undefeated in doubles with Carolyn Nichols (playing captain, from Northern California). Her other teammates were Susan Wright of Colorado and Diane Fishburne of South Carolina. The following week Marianne won the women’s 50 world doubles title with Wright. It was her first world title and Wright’s second.

Amy Alicini, also of Malibu and like Robertson a member of the Malibu Racquet Club, was a member of the Suzanne Lenglen Cup team for women 35 and over. They finished 11th.

Gretchen Magers of San Diego (see San Diego Volleys) played the top singles spot on the Margaret Court Cup team, and went undefeated for the week.
