Mammoth Open This Month

The Mammoth Open at the Snow Creek Athletic Club will take place Aug. 12-16 and is being directed by Dana Bozeman. The tournament will feature men’s and women’s open singles and doubles and A, B, and C singles and doubles as well as mixed open divisions. Montez Named Desert Sun Female Athlete of Year

After going 46-0 and becoming the only female in the Coachella Valley to ever win the CIF-Southern Section Individual title, La Quinta High’s Pam Montez was named The Desert Sun Female Athlete of the Year.  “I thought it was a lot of fun, just the feeling of it all,” said Montez, also the MVP of the Corona del Mar tournament and a winner at the prestigious Ojai event. “It’s not just playing for yourself, it’s playing for the team. And I’d love to do it all again.”
Montez will have her chance, as she has been awarded a scholarship to play for Pac-10 powerhouse UCLA under the direction of Stella Sampras-Webster.

Martineau Wins Westlake 45s Nationals

Westlake Tennis & Swim hosted the finals of the National USTA 45s Hardcourts casino online as two of Southern California’s best age-group players battled for the gold ball. In the end, it was James Martineau of Rancho Palos Verdes who proved the victor with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Valencia’s Desmond McBride.
In the doubles final, the No. 4 seeded team of John Letts and Bruce Man Son Hing beat No. 2s Ross Hessler and Jon Tyrell, 6-3; 6-4. In the singles playoff, Willie Alumbaugh of Shawnee Mission, Kan., got past Tres Cushing of Colleyville, Texas, 6-1, 6-3. In the doubles playoff top-seeded Richard Leach and Gregory Washer beat No. 3 Dexter MacBride and Desmond McBride, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Tournament director for the event was Brad Rowe.
