Stewart to Direct YTA Programs

Considering his two decades of working with kids, it’s only logical that Terry Stewart would take on a larger role with the YTA. Stewart, a constant presence at Oakland’s Mosswood Park, has been promoted to Director of YTA Programs. Stewart will oversee YTA programs in Oakland, San Francisco and Marin County.

“More than anything, I’ll be looking to improve the current programs and enhance our kids’ participation in tournaments and in our life skills programs,” said Stewart.

Stewart, who has developed a substantial adult tennis program in Oakland over the years, believes that connecting adult participation with youth programs will be crucial to finding meaningful volunteers for the community.

“There’s a lot of emphasis on community volunteerism and giving back to ones community, in my new role, I will work with [YTA executive director] Loretta Conway to look at opportunities to involve adult players in ways they might not have been before,” he said.

Stewart is also enthusiastic about establishing a YTA-endorsed method of teaching and coaching, one that tutors, mentors, parents and adult volunteers can easily and quickly adopt, but underscores that his responsibilities at Mosswood Park will remain the same.

“Terry has been a foundation of this organization,” said Conway. “He’ll be a wonderful addition in this role and will offer a tremendous amount of insight based on his years of experience and passion for youth tennis.”

He was already a pretty competitive player, competing in various junior events, but wanted to up the ante just a bit. ClubSport Pleasanton’s re-vamped lesson programs aren’t the only new items introduced since Moran and his teaching pros — Josh Uran, Kevin McQuaid and Steve Berry — came on board: the club’s four outdoor courts have been resurfaced and new lights on the 10 indoor courts offer an improved quality of play for its members. Moran has also introduced state-of-the-art technology to his vast tennis program offerings.

“We use video to visually train players and link the visual to kinesthetic movements before they hit a ball,” he explained. “Then we can track their progress over the course of their development.”

Since joining the club four years ago, Barbara Hill has become a tennis addict — something she admits isn’t so bad.

“I captain quite a few teams out of the club, right now I’m the captain of a USTA mixed doubles team, my 3.0 women’s team and a team on the Contra Costa Spring League,” Hill said. “I take private lessons and group clinics at the club but, most important, Marc will customize lessons for just my team.”
