Tennis’ Political Endorsements
Billie Jean King endorsed Hillary Clinton; Lindsay Davenport and James Blake gave money to Barack Obama. Jim Courier gave to Mitt Romney this time around and John Kerry in the last election. He also once donated to Democratic Sen. Joe Biden’s PAC. Andre Agassi has contributed tremendous amounts in the past decade. In December, he gave the maximum of $5,000 to both the Democratic senate and congressional elections committees. His first contribution was in ‘95 to Teddy Kennedy and, since then, he has shelled out a total of $158,700. He was a big fan of Iowa’s Tom Harkin.
Not surprisingly, the politically bred Pam Shriver had taken out her checkbook a lot, too. At first, she was donating to almost all Republicans (she loves the Bushes). But in recent years, she supported plenty of Democrats. After 20-plus years of donating, Shriver has given $21,300 to Democrats and $9,800 to Republicans. Johnny Mac hasn’t donated in four years, but did give to (former N.Y. Knick) Bill Bradley’s presidential campaign in ‘04. Chris Evert once gave to Sonny Bono. Martina Navratilova gave to John Edwards this time around and has donated a whole bunch to Emily’s List.
