Youth Tennis San Diego Wins Advanta WTT Junior Nationals

In a battle of two San Diego area teams, Youth Tennis San Diego Whalers edged the Westview Attackers 41-37 in Overtime to win a record 5th title at the Advanta WTT Junior Nationals a

t the Barnes Center. Youth Tennis San Diego also won the event in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

The tournament features 16 co-ed teams, ages 18 and under, from throughout the United States. Youth Tennis San Diego dropped three of the first four sets in the championship match before rallying back to win both sets of boys’ singles and take an eight-game lead into the final sets of mixed doubles.

Youth Tennis San Diego and the Westview Attackers split mixed doubles to send the overall match into overtime. After dropping the first game, Youth Tennis San Diego held serve for the 41-37 win and the title. Team members for Youth Tennis San Diego are Gannon Nicoll, Mimi Hamling, Nick Stevens, Niko Karnopp, Anna Yang, Sophia Najera and Alex Bouillin. Eric Mann is the coach.

Westview Attackers team members are Romar Hernandez, James Boyd; Megan Mc Cray; Morgan Mc Cray, and Maika Adair. Huong Nguyen is the coach.

La Jolla Championships Drew Over 1,000 Players

It’s one of the oldest tournaments in the nation and once again the La Jolla Tennis Championships held at the La Jolla Tennis Club lived up to its prestigious reputation. There were 1013 players entered and many play in several events so the tennis courts were hopping for a dgfev online casino couple of weeks. Adults played over three weekends and the juniors claimed the courts during the week. The men’s Open singles winner was Gregory Hirshman who defeated Thomas Liversage 6-3, 6-4. Anna Anikahova won the women’s Open after a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 battle against Jennifer Dawson. Men collecting trophies were: German Aragon (35s); Daniel Martinez (40s); Glenn Stephan (45s); Michael Newberry (50s); William Kellogg (55s); Logan Jenkins (60s); William Bethard (65s); Luis Cisneros (70s); Don Albares (75s); Wally Vickery (80s). Women in the winner’s circle were: Sheila Weinstock (40s); Julianne Jennings (45s); Nancy Abler-Sanchez (50s); Sue Sprague (55s). NTRP division winners included Jim Lamarca (3.5s); Ryan Johnson (4.5s); Juan Garcia (5.5s); Charise Karjala (3.5s); Jenny Sharratt (4.5s).. Father/Son winners were Jason/Rick Evans; Father/Daughter-William Kellogg/Tiffany Worst; Mother/Son – Kathy May Fritz/Taylor Fritz; Mother/Daughter – Kathy Emerson/Danielle Bryan.

Adult League Teams Advance to SoCal Sectionals

USTA Adult League teams played local matches throughout the spring and early summer months and the winners will be at the USTA SoCal online casino Sectional Championships to try to win their way into the USTA National Championships. The San Diego District Tennis Association announced the San Diego Tennis Hall of Fame inductees for the Class of 2009: George Barnes – Community Service, Philanthropy; Bob Carrothers – Junior Stand-Out; Ed Collins – Coach, Teaching Pro, Community Service; Kelly Jones – World Class, Junior Stand-Out, College Great; Dr. Homer Peabody – Community Service, Philanthropy.

The induction ceremony will be at 4 pm at the Maureen Connolly Stadium Court at Balboa Tennis Club on Saturday, August 29. Everyone is invited to attend.
