Wimbledon’s new roof, the old lady has lost that mystery, mystique and unpredictable behaviour. She has become tamed and captured by modern technology. That excitement and frustration but at the same time kept our hearts pounding as we watched matches unfold as Mother nature’s elements contributed to the drama of the centre court.
The fading light, the late dew, the wind and rain that helped to change the grass as the players would appeal to the umpire hoping that a break in play would give them another few breaths of air to survive.
Those famous words in ‘Gone with the Wind’ by Scarlet O'Hara, Tomorrow is another day’
will never be whispered again. The matches will be completed that day.
Wimbledon has sold out to TV, I predict that the finals will one day start late into afternoon early evening to accommodate American networks and the BBC. Finals day will start at 6 p m in England, this will be 1 p.m. Eastern time and 10 am Western time in the USA.
The ratings will grow and no more breakfast at Wimbledon more like beer and hot dogs lunch time.
The commercials hiked up, revenue generated. Yes, this lady of style and class has lost her innocence, a new life begins. The grass will never be the same again. ( probably a new fungus will grow)……...watch out Mother nature, she can hit back with vengeance
