But compared to the international events she’s been playing in France and England, the Stead brings in a big crowd thanks to all the locals who show up.

In the second set, there was a new player battling Ellis. The left-handed Tsay found her rhythm and slowly but effectively diminished Ellis’ confidence. Ellis wasn’t able to resist the temptation to go for the forehand winner, and her shots began to sail long and wide.

“I played Ariel a long time ago,” said Tsay. “I knew her game and I had to tell myself to not get frustrated. Winning was not my goal. I wanted to play and practice my game.”

It marked the first time in Stead Open history that two USTA juniors reached the final. Meanwhile, Weston extended his win streak by defeating his doubles partner, Chris Wettengel, 6-3, 6-2.

“It’s always a good time playing with your double’s partner,” Weston told IT. “It’s not harder. We played each other eight times in the past 16 to 18 months. We’re very familiar with each other’s game.”

Wettengel came into the match with a 4-3 career mark against Weston, but was unable to find any consistency with his first serve. And Weston simply outplayed him with his consistency and patience. It marked Weston’s third title of the summer.

“This is the best [tournament] and the biggest one because everyone comes here from different countries for the competition, which makes it harder,” said Weston. “I have to step it up here.”

Weston/Wettengel were beaten in the doubles semis against Stanford’s Gregory Hirshman/Richard Wire, who went on to take out the No. 1-seeded duo of Roman Borvanov/Brett Joelson 7-5, 7-6 in the final. Top seeds Kristen Schlukebir/ Romana Tedjakusuma defeated Suzanne Matzenauer/Alex Poorta for the women’s doubles title, while the mixed champs were the Cal contingent of Tyler Browne/Zsusanna Fodor. — by Andrea Waitrovich
