The day started off with a hitting session with the Bryan Bros. and a celeb pro-am featuring local media bigwigs such as Diane Dwyer, Lloyd LaCuesta, Randy Shandobil and Rich Walcoff. Sponsor players got a chance to be on center court with the likes of former NBA player John Lambert and MLB’s Matt Young before the Bryans took over. A ‘Miner’ Feat (and Then Some): Dahan a Perfect 3-for-3 at Napa Valley Classic
To compete in the Land Rover Napa Valley Classic round robin is akin to finding that treasured golden ticket. It’s the flagship tournament of the season, in which a coveted invitation from Cal gives three college teams a chance to play against some of the top players in the country and, for three days — Sept. 6-9 — enjoy the luxurious ambience that only California wine country in the fall can offer. The lucky teams this year were three top nationally ranked teams: Mississippi (No. 4), Michigan (No. 33) and Harvard (No. 63).
Peter Wright, the men’s head coach at Cal, founded the tournament nine years ago with Doug King, a former standout player at Cal and the longtime pro at Meadowood Resort, where the annual event is held. According to Wright, the tournament was a success for a few reasons. He views the tournament as a gauge of the year to come and is the first to admit that last year was quite a challenge on the courts.
“We’ve go a lot of talent and Napa was a great indicator of just how good we’re going to be,” Wright explained. “Napa is the start of our ‘Two-Year Plan’ strategy and we sure started out strong — we trained hard and we played hard.”
Jonathan Dahan, a junior from Paris, took center stage at the tournament, winning all three singles matches (most notably a three-set victory against No. 41 Jason Jung of Michigan 3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and collecting the Norma Miner Award as the Outstanding Player at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic.
“This is such great news for Jonathan,” Wright said. “His performance last year wasn’t up to his high standards, so starting off the year playing so well is great for him and our program.”
The addition of two high-quality freshman to the Golden Bear lineup, Dane Christoffer Konigsfeldt and New Zealander Riki McLachlan, will certainly add to the young team that only boasts one senior, Bijan Hejazi. Konigsfeldt racked up two singles wins and teamed with McLachlan for a doubles win at the Napa Classic. Claremont Resort Boasts Teenage Phenom
What’s important to 14-year-old phenom Mackenzie McDonald is training hard and competing around the world while remaining a regular kid. But true fun for a budding tennis star comes down to that one big feeling —winning the big matches — and McDonald sure is having fun this year.
Claremont Resort and Spa TD Rosie Bareis was McDonald’s first coach, teaching him the fundamentals of the game beginning at age three. For the past three years, he’s worked exclusively with former ATP pro Wayne Ferreira. Highlights from McDonald’s year include: winning both the 14s singles and doubles titles at the Easter Bowl (a monstrous feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Donald Young), training on the red clay at Nadal’s Barcelona Total Tennis Academy with the USTA, representing the U.S. at the World TeamTennis Finals in the Czech Republic, and winning four consecutive Level 3 16s national championships (USTA NorCal Sectionals, Carmel Valley, the Agassi 16s and the Dunlop 16s). Playing as a wildcard entry into the main draw at the RWI Pro Circuit, McDonald caught the eye of tournament director, Monty Basnyat, who said that the USTA should expect big things from such an “old school,” aggressive net player.
“We’re back with Rosie, fitness training and practicing at the Claremont and representing the NorCal section,” Mike McDonald, Mackie’s dad said. “And it’s all working.”
In Memoriam: Rupert Ricksen
Cal Athletic Hall of Famer Rupert Ricksen, a two-sport star in tennis and basketball in the 1950s, died of cancer on Oct. 12 at the age of 77.
Ricksen was formerly the chairman of Friends of Cal Tennis and, along with his twin brother John, was a co-recipient of the Bear of the Year award by Cal Athletics in ‘97. Rupe and John reached the semis in ‘51 and quarters in ‘52 and ‘53 at the NCAA Championships, and also claimed the ‘53 Eastern Intercollegiate title. In singles, Rupe advanced to the NCAA quarters in ‘51 and the Round of 16 in ‘52 and ‘53.
