Opting to move away from his home in San Paulo, Brazil at 16 to attend the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, Calif., Zerbini has become one of Peter Wright’s standout performers team this season. According to Zerbini, the style of play that earned him both No. 1 positions (singles and doubles) on Cal’s team is being an excessively aggressive baseliner.
“I like to hit a lot of heavy balls — a lot of groundstrokes,” he told IT. “I like working my opponent around the court, and when I get the chance, I can run around and hit a big forehand.”
But when you see him play, Zerbini’s forehand isn’t his only weapon; his backhand is just as deadly, and you can see why Wright thinks he’s such an exciting player to watch.
Teaming with senior Geoff Chizever in doubles, the Golden Bear duo is currently ranked No. 7 in the country, having banked titles at the Wilson/ITA Regionals and the Bulldog Classic Doubles Championships.
“I’m a much better singles player because of my doubles play,” Zerbini said. “Plus, I’m having a lot of fun out there with my doubles partner. The tennis team at Cal is like a second family to me.”
