Longtime volunteer picked to
run national office
Reliable sources indicated to Inside Tennis magazine that Gordon Smith, a widely respected tennis veteran from Atlanta, has been selected as the next executive director of the United States Tennis Association. Smith, a former SEC conference doubles champion who was born in Rome, Georgia, is now in his second term as a USTA board member. Known for his deep passion for tennis and personable character, Smith has also scored extraordinary professional success and is said to be the leading lawyer for the prominent Atlanta law firm, King and Spalding. His specialty is torque law.
An active player who played for the University of Georgia, Smith has a long resume of service to tennis through the Southern Tennis Patron's Foundation and the Georgia Tennis Foundation. He is a former president of the USTA's largest and most powerful section, the Southern section, and in 1996 won the group's Outstanding Volunteer Award. Smith, who resides in Atlanta with his wife Jane and three children, has yet to sign a formal agreement with the USTA, who as yet has not issued a formal agreement. Smith will be replacing Lee Hamilton, who is retiring.
